The legend goes that the city, situated at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, received its name after the Greek god of Vine and drinks, Bacchus.

WORTH VISITING

Biserica Precista was built in 1491 by Alexandru-Voda, son of Stephen the Great, who had moved his residence to Bacau. The church, made in brick, is a typical example of the 15th-century Moldavian architecture. Inside it, the ruins of a former palace, where Alexandru Voda lived, are still visible.
Due to some damages, the church was restored by ruler Vasile Lupu in 1641.

Biserica Rachitoasa was erected in 1697 by Ilie Enache-Tifescu, great sword bearer. The church was restored several times, first in 1739 by the abbot Daniel, then in 1836 by Aby the abbot Iacov. The church has been subordinated to the Vatoped church, from Mount Athos, Greece.

The "Iulian Antonescu” Museum was built in 1957 and two years later, the museum was divided into three areas: History, Natural Sciences and Art. Nowadays, the museum collections are hosted in a new and modern building. The "Iulian Antonescu” Museum has an important collection of antique objects from ancient Dacia.

The Museum of Natural Sciences "Ion Borcea" founded in 1961 was Bacau’s first museum of natural sciences. Its collection counts approximately 131,000 exhibits from different areas, such as: ornithology, geo-botanic, paleontology, geology, herpetology, entomology, and aquarium.

The Bacovia Theater
In 1948, the people from Bacau send their representatives from the world stage to the theater stage. On January 20th, the first theatric representation played by a group of young people from Bacau takes place. The initiator of this first performance is the Court Victualler Alecu Vilner.
The hall's elegance and its impeccable acoustics are considered by some specialists to be unique in Moldavia, after that of the Iasi National Theater. The wide 11m scene, the curtain with a 7m opening, the scenery ramp, the bridge for using them, the modern installation of lights is impressing. The armchairs upholstered with garnet-red plush, the golden boxes, a blue cupola which will be repainted by Nicu Enea, the chandeliers and many more offer special elegance to the theater.
