The Museum of the Romanian Peasant was opened in 1906. It displays the richest folk art collection in Romania, with over 90,000 artifacts tracing the colorful and diverse cultural life of the Romanian people. The collection includes 18,000 pieces of pottery and 20,000 examples of national dress from all over the country, as well as carpets, icons, furniture, photographs and films documenting the customs of rural life.

The Museum of the Romanian Peasant is the winner of the European Museum of the Year Award for 1996. 
 

The National Art Museum (former Royal Palace) is situated in the Revolution Square. It was first built around 1815 by Prince Dinicu Golescu and it underwent changes over several decades. Built between 1927 and 1937 in neoclassical style, it was home to King Carol II and his son, King Mihai I, until 1947.
Since 1948 the palace has been housing the National Art Museum, which currently exhibits over 100,000 works divided into two major sections, European and Romanian, as well as an impressive collection of Romanian and European art dating from the 15th to the 20th century. There are also some early Brancusi sculptures. The European Gallery displays pictures of El Greco, Monet, Rembrandt, Renoir, the Breughels (father and son) Cezanne and Rubens.

The Parliament Palace (Palatul Parlamentului) was built in 1984 by order of Communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu and is the second largest administrative building in the world after the Pentagon. The palace boasts 12 stories, 1,100 rooms, an enormous lobby and four underground levels, including an enormous nuclear bunker.

Today, it hosts Romania’s Parliament and serves as an international conference center. 

Cotroceni Palace and Museum

A former royal residence built between 1679 and 1681 by Prince and ruler Serban Cantacuzino, the palace was King Carol I’s home, and he made important changes to its architecture. At the end of the 19th century, Heir-to-the-Crown Ferdinand ordered the partial demolition of the palace, which was later reconstructed by French architect Paul Gottereau in neoclassical style. In 1977, Nicolae Ceausescu transformed it into an official guesthouse with the addition of a new wing.

After 1990, the old wing of the palace became a museum. The Oriental Hall, the Norwegian Hall and the Queen’s Chamber are almost unchanged from the original design and are worth visiting. Very important collection of medieval art can also be seen here. The new wing serves as the seat of the Romanian Presidency.

Cantacuzino Palace (Palatul Cantacuzino). The palace construction began in 1899. Blending neoclassical architectural style with Art Nouveau elements, it features wrought iron balconies, tall arched windows. Above the main entrance there is a giant shell-shaped porte-cochere, and two stone lions guard the entrance.
Today the palace houses the 'George Enescu' Museum which displays the musician’s manuscripts and personal belongings like one of his first violins.
 
The Old Court Church (Biserica Curtea Veche), also called the Old Princely Church, is situated near the Old Princely Court, and is the oldest church in Bucharest, its construction dating back to 1558. The church was built in the Wallachian architectural style of the 16th century. This church was the coronation place of Wallachia's ruling princes for almost three centuries (from the second half of the 16th century to the first half of the 19th century). The beautifully carved door was added in the early 18th century by Prince Stefan Cantacuzino. The interior is adorned with wonderful frescoes, some dating from the 16th century. On the left side of the portal, facing the apse, are the murals of the church's founders: Mircea Ciobanul (whose tombstone is within the church) and his wife, Lady Chiajna; on the right side of the portal are the murals depicting Prince Stefan Cantacuzino and his wife, Lady Pauna.
 

The Old Court (Curtea Veche), the oldest part of Bucharest, lies around the Old Princely Court (Curtea Veche) at the end of Strada Franceza (French Street). In the 15th century, Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler) built his fortress here. A museum was founded in 1972 when the archaeological diggings revealed the remains of the fortress, consisting in some truncated pieces of wall and a few arcades, tombstones and a Corinthian column.

Manuc's Inn (Hanul lui Manuc) built around 1808 to shelter traveling merchants, Manuc's Inn is the best preserved of Bucharest's old inns. Built between 1804 and 1808 by the wealthy Armenian trader Emanuel Marzaian (called Manuc Bey by the Turks), in 1812 the inn witnessed the preliminary talks of the Peace Treaty that put an end to the Russian -Turkish War (1806-1812). A favorite meeting and resting place for tradesmen in those times, Manuc's Inn has preserved its old style and flavor to this day. It now serves as a hotel with a restaurant, a wine cellar and a pastry shop.

Romanian Savings Bank or CEC Building. Its construction began in 1894 on the site of a 16th-century monastery. It is an elegant eclectic building. The square-shaped palace has a large central dome with metallic ribs separated by glass, which allows natural light to come in; there are also four smaller domes. The arch at the entrance, with its Corinthian columns, is a must of any architectural city tour.

National Theater (Teatrul National), located in University Square, was built in 1973 after the blueprints of a group of Romanian architects.
Originally the building had a different facade, modeled after the architecture of Moldova's monasteries, but in 1984 it was remodeled to its present massive shape. The theater has 4 performance halls.
Last, if you feel like having refreshment, you'll find two bars located on top of the National Theater. One is an open terrace bar open only in summer, while the other one is open during fall, winter and spring. 
 
Cretulescu Church (Biserica Cretulescu) sited in Piata Revolutiei, the red-brick church was built in 1722 by order of boyar Iordache Cretulescu and his wife Safta, one of Prince Constantin Brancoveanu’s daughters. It was built in the Brancovenesque Style, a mixture of Byzantine and Western architectural elements together with indigenous forms. The frescoes inside the porch are outstanding. To the side of the church stands a memorial bust of Corneliu Coposu who spent 17 years in prison for his anti-communist activities and was awarded the Legion d'Honeur by the French government.

Antim Monastery was completed in 1715 after the blueprints of Antim Ivireanu who was the metropolitan bishop of Wallachia. The Antim Monastery is built in a beautiful Brancovenesque style complex. It is located very close to the Palace of Parliament.

Calea Victoriei (Victory Road) is one of Bucharest's most charming streets. It was built as a main road in 1692 under orders from Constantin Brancoveanu who needed a road to link his palace of Mogosoaia with the Old Court.
In the inter-war period, Calea Victoriei became one of the most fashionable streets. Following this avenue from Piata Natiunilor Unite to Piata Victoriei, you will find some of the most beautiful buildings in Bucharest. Among these are Stavropoleos Church - in Stavropoleous St., the National Savings Bank or CEC building, the Art Deco Telephone Palace, the Cretulescu Church, the Central University Library, the Romanian Athenaeum, the Royal Palace, and the Cantacuzino Palace.
 

Bucharest University consists of various buildings, the oldest one built between 1857-1859 in neoclassic style. The buildings on the sides were built in 1912-1916. The University as an institution was created in 1864 by Alexandru Ioan Cuza, ruler of the newly united principalities, Wallachia and Moldova.

The Triumphal Arch (Arcul de Triumf) In northern Bucharest, based on the triumphal arch in Paris, the structure was erected in 1935-1936 to commemorate the troops which contributed to the Romanian independence, as well as those who fought in WWI. On one side, it is decorated with the portraits of King Ferdinand and Queen Maria.
