Cluj-Napoca lies in the heart of Transylvania. It is one of the seven walled citadels populated by Saxons in Transylvania, known in German as the Siebenbürgen. (The other Siebenbürgen citadels are Bistrita, Brasov, Medias, Sebes, Sibiu and Sighisoara).
The city's unique personality comes from its multiculturalism and diversity. Beautiful buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries in a multitude of architectural styles embellish the streets and the numerous churches of different denominations attest to Cluj's multiethnic history.
