"The “Confessions” and “Diaries” of Franz Kafka, written as he came from Prague to visit Milan to admire Leonardo da Vinci’s “machines”, included the beginnings of an explosion of modernity in a city of Italy from an economic and industrial point of view. Milan cannot be described merely by what it is, but also by how it has influenced numerous figures of culture, art, science and modernity from all periods. Leonardo da Vinci, Giuseppe Verdi, Alessandro Manzoni and Giorgio Armani are but a few starting points in describing a city about which so many have written and continue to write."
