Perugia is a lively, cosmopolitan hill town in the green Umbria Region of Central Italy, with many historical buildings, a stunning central square and elegant shops.

The historic center is built on the high hills along the right bank of the Tiber River. An art town that draws large numbers of visitors, Perugia is a multiethnic and multicultural center with a university and a large Italian language school for foreigners.

Perugia has a lot to offer to the traveler and is a good base for visiting other hill towns in Umbria such as Assisi, Spello, Gubbio, Lake Trasimeno, and the famous Deruta pottery.

WORTH VISITING

In Perugia you will find monuments everywhere bearing witness to its many centuries of history, art and culture, starting with the Etruscan Arch, also known as the Arch of Augustus, a monumental gate in the ancient Etruscan city walls and later restored in Roman times, the Etruscan Well and Porta Marzia.

Piazza IV Novembre is one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. Here you will find Palazzo dei Priori, an elegant Gothic edifice dating back as far as 1270. It is also the home of the National Gallery of Umbria, which holds some of the greatest masterpieces of Italian art from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. Piazza IV Novembre

The stairs in Piazza IV Novembre lead to a Gothic portal surmounted by the city's symbols, the griffin and lion, probably cast in Venice in 1274. These are reproductions - the originals are kept in the Galleria Nazionale.

The portal leads into Sala dei Notari, formerly the Town Council Hall, which was allocated to the notaries guild in 1582.

To the right of the Gothic portal on the ground floor, there is the entrance to Collegio della Mercanzia. Beyond runs the passageway to Via dei Priori and Collegio del Cambio.

Piazza IV Novembre has always been the urban, political and monumental center of Perugia.

It was the central square of the Etruscan city and the Forum when Perugia passed under the dominion of Rome.

The symbol of the free city of Perugia, Fontana Maggiore that stands at the center of the square is considered one of the finest still in existence. It was completed between 1275 and 1278, designed by Frà Bevignate of Perugia with bas-reliefs by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano.

The fountain is made up of two polygonal basins in white and pink stone, placed one above the other. The panels on the lower basin represent salient episodes from the Old Testament (Adam by Eve, Samson by Delilah, etc.). The upper polygonal basin stands on 24 small columns, each surmounted by a statue. The statues represent characters from the mythological tale concerning the founding of Perugia, as well as references to its political and territorial role.

Other interesting buildings are Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and Palazzo della Vecchia Università, the old seat of the university and now used as the Perugia Courthouse, Palazzo Donini and Palazzo Cesaroni, respectively the seats of the Umbria Regional Cabinet and the Regional Council, Palazzo della Provincia (1870) in the Lombard style, and Palazzo della Penna, an exhibition center with permanent collections, which also hosts temporary exhibits. There is also the elegant theater, Teatro Morlacchi (1788), as well as Palazzo Antinori-Gallenga Stuart (1754), home of the University of Foreigners. San Pietro Church

Perugia has many religious buildings worthy of notice: Basilica of San Pietro, with its splendid cloister, Basilica of San Domenico, next door to the National Archeological Museum of Umbria and its extensive collection of Umbrian, Etruscan and Roman artifacts, the round Temple of Sant’Angelo, the San Francesco al Prato complex with the former church of San Francesco and the Oratory of San Bernardino, the Church of San Filippo Neri, the San Severo Chapel with a fresco, the Holy Trinity and Saints, painted in part by Raphael and in part by Perugino, the Church of Santa Maria Nuova with a wooden choir and organ built in 1584, the Church of Sant’Ercolano, and the Church of San Bevignate (13th century).

Other enjoyable visits in town are the Botanical Garden and the Medieval Garden, the latter at the Abbey of San Pietro.

Perugia has 16 main buslines that run every 20-30 minutes, some of them every 30-60 minutes to and from the ciy outskirts towards the center of town and between the different areas. The itineraries are designed to render access possible to all the strategic points in the city, whether by direct service or through a connection.

Taxi

Traveling by taxi is rather expensive, especially when traveling between 10:00 p.m. - 7:00 a.m., on Sunday or holidays. Try to negotiate the taxi fare in advance if possible and we recommend you to use only the official licensed taxis, which are clearly identified by the taxi sign on the top and a numbered shield on the side.
