Spas in Stuttgart

Mineral spas in the Bad Cannstatt district are Western Europe's largest, producing more than 22 million liters of mineral water each day. For a relaxing bath in one of Stuttgart’s Spa Baths, head to Bad Cannstatt. It offers modern facilities and several beauty and health treatments, which should prepare you for an evening out sampling the many local dishes, wines and beers.

“The Green U”

Almost 20% of the Stuttgart territory is under landscape protection. The unique attraction of the public parks and relaxation facilities covering a surface of 5.6 square kilometers is the large "green U". It leads from the Schlossplatz in the city center to the forests on the edge of the city.

Television Tower

Built between 1954 and 1956, the 217m-high Television Tower was the first of its kind to be built of reinforced concrete. The viewing platform at 150 meters above the street level offers an unprecedented view of the city and suburbs. There is a restaurant near the viewing platform and another at the base of the tower.

From Stuttgart, you can take many good day trips, as it lies about an hour from the Black Forest and a similar distance from the Swabian Jura.

Some old university towns such as Tübingen (30 km), Heidelberg (ca. 80 km) or Freiburg (120 km) are close by.

Tübingen’s medieval center is very charming and worth the travel from Stuttgart. Apart from that, there is also a jazz cellar and various bars and cafés in Tübingen, which should definitely be visited.

Just an hour and a half south are the Swiss border and Zurich. An hour south is Triberg, a beautiful old village in the heart of the Black Forest which specializes in cuckoo clocks. An hour and a half west from Stuttgart is Strasbourg, a small but charming city in France.

ENTERTAINMENT

Also located in Schlossplatz, it boasts a 135m long colonnade, the ground floor houses various cafes and shops and is a prefect spot to relax and soak up the atmosphere with many street performers entertaining during the warmer months.

Nightlife

The most popular street for clubbing is Theodor-Heuss-Strasse. Over the past years, several bars, clubs and lounges have opened here. It has become the most popular place for people to go out during the weekend. In summer, there are also many opportunities to have a drink outside.

On the outskirts of Stuttgart, in Möhringen, there is a hotel/ conference/ entertainment complex, SI Centrum. This complex includes a theater for Broadway shows, the Millennium hotel, and a spacious underground complex that houses many conference rooms, bars and restaurants.

Sports

The city has a reputation for organizing major sports events. It hosted the 1993 World Championships in Athletics and many otherworld and European championships of all kind of sports. It was one of the twelve host cities of the FIFA World Cup 2006. Six matches, including the 3rd and 4th place playoff were played at the Daimler Stadium. Stuttgart is also the 2007 "European Capital of Sports", hosting events such as the 2007 UCI World Cycling Championships Road Race and the IAAF World Athletics Final.

Fun fair - “Cannstatter Wasen”. Beertents and rollercoaster - early September. Canstatter Wasen is the second largest fun fair in the world. Visiting it is more pleasant than the Oktoberfest in Munich, because tents are not so overcrowded.

Public Transportation
Stuttgart has an extremely well integrated public transport system, which includes the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, Buses and Trams. A specialty of public transportation is the rack railway between Stuttgart-Marienplatz and Stuttgart-Degerloch. It is the only urban rack railway in Germany.

It is worth buying a daily travel card (around 5 Euro) which will allow you to use all public transport types. All forms of tickets can be bought from vending machines at bus stops or train stations.

It is also worth investing in a ‘Stuttcard’ and ‘Stuttcart Plus card’, which offer unlimited travel and reductions at the main tourist sites and various theaters and restaurants.

Public transportation at late night (after 0:00 a.m.) is a problem in Stuttgart. Be careful if you have a very early airplane since there are no connections to the airport early in the morning between 1 and 5.

Stuttgart is a hub in the InterCity networks of Deutsche Bahn AG (DBAG), with through services to Berlin and most other major German cities. There are also international services to Strasbourg, Paris, Vienna and Zurich. These long-distance trains call at Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof, the city main line terminal.

Taxi
Taxis are rather expensive in Stuttgart (around 10 Euro for a 4-minute drive). During the day, it is better to use public transportation and take a taxi only at night, when public transportation is not available.
