Timişoara Orthodox Cathedral is an Orthodox church built between 1937 and 1940 and it is a mixture of Byzantine style and local religious tradition. It has 11 towers, of which the central being the highest is 96 m high. In its underground museum, the Cathedral houses many valuable religious artifacts, such as old icons and early writings in Romanian language. 

The Millennium Church is located in the Fabric quarter of Timişoara and is one of the most impressive churches from “little Vienna”. The construction of the church began in 1896, in Neo-Romanesque style. 

The Catholic Dome was built between 1736 and 1774. The building of the Dome was initially started by Austrian architects, and finished later on by two architects from Timisoara, Johann Theodor Kostka and Carl Alexander Steinlein. The Dome was built in Austrian baroque style and it was dedicated to Saint George, the dioceses patron saint. 

The Hunyadi Castle, the oldest building of Timisoara, was built between 1307 and 1315. Later on, between 1443 and 1447, Iancu de Hunedoara (John Hunyadi) built another castle on the foundations of the former one. The Castle follows an older architectonic style, with Romanic and Gothic elements. Nowadays, the Castle houses the 
Banat Museum with its History and Natural Sciences Section.
 

The Victory Square (Piata Victoriei) or the city center is boarded by many impressive buildings: the Metropolitan Church and the Opera (also housing the Theater). The Theater of Timisoara is the only one in the country that houses three theaters in one building: the Romanian, the German and the Hungarian one. This is only one indicator of the inter-ethnical tolerance in this place. The charming building hosting the National Opera House was erected between 1871 and 1875 in Neo-Byzantine style. Since then, it has been restored twice, due to fire damages.  

The Union Square (Piata Unirii) is a dazzling square near the center of Timisoara. It is an enchanting place surrounded by historical buildings, such as: the Roman-Catholic Cathedral (the Dome); the Serbian Orthodox Church, with its splendid baroque sculptures; the Baroque Palace; the monument of the Holy Trinity (sculptured in Vienna in 1739-1740), a striking baroque work situated in the middle of the square, showing a group of human beings suffering from plague. 

The Union Square is a bohemian destination preferred by teenagers, students and tourists who can relax while feeding the pigeons or listening to the bells of the Catholic Dome. In summer there are lots of terraces where people have a nice chat and a cocktail.

The Liberty Square is the military center of the town, dominated by the Commander in Chief’s Residence with its rococo-decorated facade; the Old Town hall erected between 1731 and 1734 on the foundations of a former Turkish Bath; the War Chancellery (1730) sculptured by Blim and Wasserburger in Vienna.

Parks 
Timisoara is the city of gardens and parks. The most charming can be found along the Bega Channel. The name “town of gardens and roses” is well deserved by Timisoara. Among the green areas of Timisoara we can mention: Queen Maria Park (1868), the Central Park (the second half of the last century), dominated by the Monument of the Romanian Soldier, Doina Park, Plevna Park (after 1900) and later on, Rosarium (the Roses Garden), the Alpinet Park, the Children’s Park, etc. 

The city has countless restaurants, clubs and pubs. If you fancy dancing, the city has several good discos where you can enjoy. 

The National Opera House puts on display wonderful opera and theater performances. 

For those keen on sports, Timisoara has a great number of tennis, football, volleyball courts. During summer, a popular destination is the swimming pools. 

If you visit Timisoara in May, don’t miss the Beer Festival, or in October, the Wine Festival.
For a pleasant and relaxing time, visitors can take a walk on the Corso (Victoria Square), Union Square or in one of the city’s many parks.

For shopping fans, as well as for entertainment or sporting purposes, the biggest and most appropriate place is Iulius Mall, to which the architectural style – of Roman Empire – is worth admiring. You also have a great deal of shops in the city at your disposal. For souvenirs, try the shops that sell traditional products from Victory Square, Bega or Iulius Mall. 

International fashion is well represented through the presence of many renowned fashion shops.
From the Recas winery, near Timisoara, comes one of the best Romanian wines. This can be the perfect gift for friends.
